Bethany sits in Washington County on the western side of the Portland metropolitan area, and its map looks unmistakably like the late twentieth century. Instead of a grid, the streets loop and curl into cul-de-sacs, crescents and gently bending collectors, with small parks and stream corridors threaded between neighbourhoods. The pattern is soft and organic, almost like a leaf's veins.
Much of the community grew up in recent decades, as the metro area pushed outward from the hills west of the city.
