Düsseldorf is shaped by the Rhine, which curves through the city in two broad loops. The main part of the city is on the right bank, while Oberkassel and other left-bank districts face it across the water. Several long bridges cross the river, and on a map their straight lines contrast with the river's generous curves.
The Altstadt is packed into a small area close to the riverbank, with narrow lanes and many small bars, often described as the longest bar in the world. A promenade runs along the water above a road tunnel. Nearby, the Königsallee follows a straight canal lined with trees, dividing the old centre from the grid of newer streets to the east.
Downstream, the MedienHafen turned an old harbour into a district of offices and restaurants, including three buildings by Frank Gehry. The Rheinturm, the city's television tower, stands at its edge.
