Mönchengladbach lies west of the Rhine near the Dutch border, and its map shows a city with two centres. The old town of Gladbach sits on a hill around the abbey church in the north. The Abteiberg, the abbey hill, holds the Minster and the Museum Abteiberg, a museum of modern art designed by Hans Hollein and opened in 1982.
