Alamata lies in the south of Tigray, in the Raya lowlands, where the flat valley floor meets the steep eastern edge of the Ethiopian highlands. On a map the town gathers around the main north–south road linking Addis Ababa with Mekelle. That road forms a clear spine, and streets branch off it into the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The setting gives the map two very different halves. On one side, the escarpment rises sharply, with contour lines and winding roads climbing toward the highlands. On the other, the valley opens out into fields and farmland. Seasonal streams run down from the hills and cross the plain, leaving pale, braided channels.

Escarpment edge
To the west the land rises steeply into the highlands. Roads zigzag up the slope, and the terrain contrasts strongly with the flat valley below.
