Ko e mape
Amos lies in the Abitibi region of western Quebec, on the Harricana River, which flows north toward James Bay. The town was founded in 1914, when the railway reached this part of the province, and it is one of the oldest towns in Abitibi. From above, its streets form a regular grid on both sides of the river, connected by bridges and surrounded by farmland, lakes and boreal forest.
At the centre stands the Cathédrale Sainte-Thérèse-d'Avila, a circular Roman-Byzantine church with a large dome, a striking landmark for a town of this size. Amos is also known for its spring water, which is filtered naturally through an esker, a long glacial ridge of sand and gravel nearby.
An Amos map poster is shaped by the Harricana, which divides the town and gives the composition a strong natural axis. The grid on each bank, the bridges and the long roads running out into the forest make a clear, balanced image of a northern town built at a river crossing.
The river runs through the middle of Amos on its long route north to James Bay. On the map it splits the street grid into two halves.
The round cathedral sits at the heart of the town, and the streets around it are one of the most recognisable points in the grid.
The town was laid out in the early twentieth century with a straightforward grid of streets, a legacy of its origins as a settlement on the railway.

Ko e hā ʻa Amos
Amos means a lot to people from Abitibi, to those who have worked in the region's forests and mines, and to anyone who has driven its long northern roads. The map shows the town as it is: a river, a grid and the forest beyond.
