Bacuri lies in the north of Maranhão state in Brazil, in a coastal region where the Atlantic cuts deep into the land through estuaries, bays and tidal channels. Water dominates the map around the town: rivers that wind and branch toward the sea, broad areas of mangrove, and a coastline so indented that land and water interlock.
The town itself is modest, a compact set of streets close to the water, with roads leading inland across low, flat country toward neighbouring municipalities.
