Baie-Comeau lies on the north shore of the St. Lawrence estuary, in Quebec's Côte-Nord region, where the river is already wide enough to feel like a sea. The town stretches along the coast in a long, irregular band, its streets fitted around rocky ground, small bays and patches of forest. To the southwest, the Manicouagan River meets the estuary in a wide mouth that shapes the whole map.
The town was founded in 1937 by Robert R. McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune, who built a paper mill here to supply newsprint. Industry has shaped the plan ever since, through a large aluminium smelter, port facilities and the hydroelectric dams on the Manicouagan river system upstream. Former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney was born in Baie-Comeau.
A Baie-Comeau map poster captures a place defined by water and rock. The ragged coastline, the river mouth and the gaps where rock outcrops interrupt the streets all give the print an unusual rhythm. Neighbourhoods appear as separate clusters joined by a few main roads. The pattern also reflects the 1982 merger with the neighbouring town of Hauterive.
The north shore of the St. Lawrence forms a long, deeply cut edge along the town. Its coves and points give the print a ragged coastal outline.
The wide mouth of the Manicouagan River opens into the estuary on the southwestern side. This broad expanse of water balances the dense streets on the page.
Rock outcrops and wooded patches break up the streets, so neighbourhoods sit in separate pockets joined by winding roads rather than forming one continuous area.

People who grew up on the Côte-Nord, or who worked at the mill, the smelter or the dams, often feel a strong attachment to this stretch of coast. A map of Baie-Comeau shows the shoreline and neighbourhoods exactly as they are, a clear reminder of home.
