Bail-Hongal lies in Belagavi district in northern Karnataka, in a broad farming landscape of black-soil fields. On a map, the town is compact: a dense centre of lanes and markets, surrounded by more open residential streets, with roads leaving in several directions toward neighbouring towns and villages. Beyond the edge, the land is almost entirely farmland.
The town is closely associated with Kittur Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur who led an armed resistance against the East India Company in 1824.
