Ko e mape
Battir lies in the hills southwest of Jerusalem, in the West Bank. Its map is shaped by steep terrain: houses and lanes gather on a hillside above a valley, and the streets curve with the contours rather than following any grid. Below the village, the land falls in narrow agricultural terraces towards the valley floor.
The terraces are Battir's defining feature. Irrigated by an ancient system of channels fed by natural springs, they have been farmed for centuries, with water shared among village families according to long-standing tradition. In 2014 this cultural landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the Land of Olives and Vines.
The historic railway line between Jaffa and Jerusalem runs through the valley below the village. A Battir map poster renders the curving lanes, the valley and the railway in fine lines, a plan that reflects how closely the village has adapted to its landscape and how carefully that landscape has been shaped.
Stone-walled terraces step down the hillside below the village, part of a cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO in 2014.
The village's streets curve with the slope, forming irregular, winding lines that trace the shape of the hillside.
The old Jaffa–Jerusalem railway passes through the valley below, drawing a long, smooth line along the base of the terraces.
