Bugembe lies on the eastern edge of Jinja in Uganda's Eastern Region, close to the northern shore of Lake Victoria and to where the Nile begins its journey north. From above, the town spreads over gently rolling ground, with the main road to Jinja passing through and smaller streets branching into residential areas.
Bugembe is closely associated with the Busoga Kingdom, and it is a centre of the kingdom's cultural and administrative life. The surrounding countryside is agricultural, with small farms and sugar cane fields forming a patchwork on the outskirts of the town.
