Bulgan is the administrative centre of Bulgan Province in northern Mongolia, in the zone where steppe gives way to the forested hills that stretch toward the Russian border. The town sits on a valley floor, and from above its small size is obvious: a few dozen blocks surrounded by vast open land.
The map shows a central core of apartment blocks and public buildings on a fairly regular plan. Around it is a wider ring of fenced ger districts, where each family plot holds a house or a felt tent. Those plots create a distinctive dotted texture, very different from a European suburb.
