The Ría de Vigo
A broad inlet of the Atlantic separates Cangas from Vigo. It gives the map a large, calm field of water with the town's shoreline drawn sharply along its northern edge.

Cangas sits on the Morrazo peninsula in Galicia, on the northern side of the Ría de Vigo. On a map the ría is a long wedge of water. The town fills a shallow curve of its shore, and Vigo lies directly across. The coastline is the strongest line on the sheet. It moves in and out around small coves, the harbour moles and sandy beaches, then climbs into green, broken ground.
The older part of the town gathers close to the port. Narrow lanes run between the church, the market and the waterfront. Further out the streets loosen into a scatter of parishes along roads that follow the hills. Passenger boats cross the ría to Vigo all day, so a dotted route over the water fits the place well. At the outer end of the ría, the Cíes Islands close the view toward the Atlantic.
A Cangas do Morrazo map poster puts land and sea almost in balance. There is the busy grain of the harbour, the smooth expanse of the ría, and the lighter pattern of the villages on the slopes behind. The town is also remembered for María Soliña, a local woman tried by the Inquisition in the seventeenth century. Her story is still told here as part of Cangas's identity.

The fishing port and its breakwaters form the most geometric shapes in town. Straight arms push into the ría, and the dense old streets press up behind them.
West and east of the centre, the coast breaks into a string of sandy bays. Each is a soft curve between rocky points along the peninsula.

Ko e hā ʻa Cangas do Morrazo
Many people who hang Cangas know it from summer. They remember the ferry across from Vigo, a beach on the ría, a family house somewhere in the parishes above town. The map records that geography without any sentiment: the water, the harbour, the roads climbing the hill.
