Chilapa de Álvarez sits in the mountains of central Guerrero, well above the hot Pacific coast. From above, the town is a tight cluster of blocks set into a basin. Roads climb out of it in several directions, following the ridges and valleys instead of running straight. Around the edges, the contour lines press close, and the built-up area thins into scattered houses and fields.
At the centre is the main square and the large cathedral, and most of the street grid lines up with them. Chilapa is known across the region for its weekly market, which fills the streets near the plaza, and for its handcrafts and traditional dances.
