Daru is the capital of Western Province in Papua New Guinea. It sits on Daru Island, a small, low island off the southern coast near the mouth of the Fly River and close to the Torres Strait islands of Australia. On the map, the entire island fits into the frame, with shallow sea all around.
The town covers much of the island. Streets and houses sit close together, and the airstrip is a long, straight shape through the built-up area. The coastline is irregular, with reefs, sandbanks and mudflats around it, and the mainland coast lies across a narrow strait to the north.
