Ko e mape
Dzuunmod is the administrative centre of Töv Province in central Mongolia. It lies about forty kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar, on the far side of Bogd Khan Mountain, a protected massif that separates the town from the capital. It is small in population but plays an important role as a provincial centre.
The map shows a planned central district of straight streets and administrative blocks, surrounded by ger districts where fenced plots form a looser, irregular pattern. A Dzuunmod map poster shows how quickly this settlement gives way to open steppe on all sides.
The Manzushir Monastery, an eighteenth-century site partly restored after destruction in the 1930s, lies in the hills a short distance north of the town. On a map of the surrounding country, the slopes of Bogd Khan to the north contrast with the wide, almost empty land to the south.
The town centre has straight streets and regular blocks, built during the socialist period as the administrative seat of the province.
Around the centre, fenced plots with gers and small houses form a looser grid, a typical feature of Mongolian towns.
The hills of Bogd Khan Mountain rise north of town, with the Manzushir Monastery on their slopes, a sharp contrast with the flat steppe.
