Forest Lake is in Washington County, north of the Twin Cities, and takes its name from the lake at its centre. The lake is made up of three connected basins stretching from west to east. On the map they appear as a chain of irregular white shapes with a scalloped shoreline, lined by homes and docks.
The town centre sits on the west side of the lake, near Interstate 35. This is where the highway splits into I-35E, toward St. Paul, and I-35W, toward Minneapolis. The split is visible from above as a clean Y-shape in the road network. Around it, residential streets, cul-de-sacs and smaller lakes spread into surrounding woodland and wetland.
