Gulebage lies in the Yarkand oasis in southwestern Xinjiang, on the edge of the county town of Shache. Water from the mountains shapes this landscape, carried across flat land by canals and ditches. On a map the result is a patchwork of straight lanes, long field plots and clusters of houses. The desert is never far beyond them.
The Yarkand oasis was a stop on the southern Silk Road route around the Taklamakan Desert, and its settlement pattern reflects a long farming tradition. Roads tend to follow irrigation lines, so the grid comes less from planning and more from how water is shared. Lanes and channels run side by side, and the fields between them read as long, narrow rectangles.
A Gulebage map poster captures that quiet order in fine lines. Streets are denser toward Shache and thin out into village lanes further away, until cultivation gives way to dry ground. It is an unusual subject for a wall and a meaningful one for anyone with ties to this corner of Xinjiang.
Many roads run alongside the canals and ditches that distribute water across the oasis. Together they form long parallel lines that give the map its underlying structure.
Toward the county town the street network thickens into a denser urban pattern, in clear contrast with the looser rural lanes around it.
Between the roads, cultivated plots form narrow rectangles and irregular parcels. They leave pale areas on the poster that reflect the oasis farmland.

An oasis map has its own beauty: a small world of order held together by water, set against a much larger emptiness. For people from the Yarkand area, or for anyone who has travelled the southern Silk Road, it is a personal and uncommon piece to frame.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are all editable, so you can write the name in your own spelling or add a date. Choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white through Noir, Paper and Blueprint to Sand. Download 300 DPI files for $9 or order a printed poster.
