Houmt Souk is the main town of Djerba, the flat, low-lying island off the south-east coast of Tunisia. The name means roughly 'market quarter', and the old centre is still a close network of covered souks, small squares and old fondouks, the courtyard inns where travelling merchants once stayed.
From above, the town sits close to the northern shore. Its old core is a tight tangle of lanes, and newer streets spread outward toward the palm groves and farmland in the island's interior. On the coast, the harbour and the Borj el-Kebir, a fortress rebuilt in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, mark the point where the town meets the sea.
A Houmt Souk map poster places all of this against the plain blank of the Mediterranean. The irregular lanes of the souk quarter contrast with the straight seafront and the open, lightly marked island around it. It suits people who have spent summers on Djerba, and Djerbians living abroad who want the market streets of home on the wall.
Covered markets and narrow lanes form the densest, most intricate part of the map, a small maze at the centre of the town.
The seafront fortress stands on the coast by the harbour, a compact shape at the water's edge that anchors the northern side of the frame.
Djerba is almost level, so the streets spread outward without any hills getting in the way, gradually fading into farmland and palm groves.

Ko e hā ʻa Houmt Souk
Houmt Souk is a place people keep returning to, for its markets, harbour and slow island pace. A map of it is a lasting reminder of long summers, or of home for Djerbians who have moved away.
