Ji’an sits on the north bank of the Yalu River in Jilin province, directly across from the North Korean city of Manpo. The town occupies a small basin enclosed by forested hills, and on a map it takes the form of a riverside grid pressed between water and slopes, with the Yalu tracing a broad curve along its southern edge.
From the early centuries AD until the fifth century this was Guonei, known in Korean as Gungnae, a capital of the Goguryeo kingdom. Remains of its walls lie within the modern town, the Wandu mountain fortress stands nearby, and the valley holds thousands of ancient tombs. With the Gwanggaeto Stele, they form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Few small cities carry such a layered map. A Ji’an map poster shows the present street plan with its ancient echoes: the old walled city at the heart of the grid, the tomb-dotted valleys around it, the rail bridge reaching across the river to Manpo, and the hills that have framed this basin since it was a royal seat.
The wide river curves along the city's southern edge, with North Korea's Manpo on the opposite bank, giving the sheet a strong natural line and a real frontier.
The remains of the Goguryeo capital's walls sit within the modern centre, so the historic city and today's streets share much the same footprint.
Forested slopes surround the small basin, leaving the built-up area as a tight, well-defined shape at the centre of the poster.
