Jičín is a small town in the Hradec Králové Region, and from above its plan is tidy and easy to read. The historic core forms a tight oval around a broad rectangular square, with narrow lanes running off each corner and newer housing spreading outward along the main roads into the surrounding fields.
The square is named after Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Thirty Years' War general who made Jičín the seat of his duchy in the seventeenth century and planned it as a residence town. His ambitions still show in the layout: a long, perfectly straight avenue of lime trees runs out of town toward the Libosad garden loggia, a line that stands out clearly on the map.
The town is also known as a gateway to Bohemian Paradise, the landscape of sandstone rock towns and wooded ridges to the north and west. The lime avenue
A long, straight tree-lined avenue leads from the edge of town toward the Libosad loggia, a planned seventeenth-century axis that cuts across the surrounding streets and fields like a drawn line.
