Jōsō lies in southwestern Ibaraki Prefecture, on the flat Kanto Plain north of Tokyo. On a map, the city is defined by water: the Kinugawa River runs north to south through its centre, with the Kokaigawa River further east. Between them lies a patchwork of rice paddies, villages and small commercial areas, stitched together by roads and the Kanto Railway Jōsō Line.
The city was formed in 2006 when Mitsukaidō merged with the town of Ishige. In September 2015, heavy rain caused the Kinugawa to breach its levee here, flooding a large part of the city, an event that led to major reconstruction of the river's embankments and to a strong local focus on flood preparedness.
A Jōsō map poster shows a landscape organised around rivers and farmland, with settlements strung along roads and the railway. The parallel lines of the waterways and the fine texture of fields make an understated, horizontal composition. It is a meaningful piece for those who know the city and its recent story.
The Kinugawa flows through the centre of Jōsō between raised levees, forming a strong vertical line that divides the city and shapes the street network on either side.
Rice fields cover much of the city's land, creating a fine, regular pattern of small plots around villages and farm roads.
The Kanto Railway line runs north to south through the city, linking stations such as Mitsukaidō and Ishige, with small commercial clusters forming around them.

For residents, former residents and those who helped after the 2015 flood, Jōsō holds real significance. A map of the city is a calm way to honour home and the landscape of rivers and fields around it.
