Junín sits on the high plateau of central Peru at roughly four thousand metres, surrounded by wide grasslands rather than steep valleys. The town is laid out on a grid of blocks around a central plaza, the familiar Spanish colonial pattern, and from above it looks compact and orderly against the vast, treeless plain around it.
Nearby lies Lake Junín, also called Chinchaycocha, one of the largest lakes entirely within Peru and home to birds found nowhere else. The plain outside town was the site of the Battle of Junín in 1824, a cavalry engagement in the wars of independence, and the area is now a historic sanctuary.

Lake Junín
The large lake lies to the north of town, bordered by reed beds and marshy shoreline. On a wider view it becomes the dominant shape, a pale expanse with soft, irregular edges.
