Kairāna lies in the Shamli district of western Uttar Pradesh, close to the Yamuna River, which marks the border with Haryana just to the west. The town sits on the flat, fertile Doab plain, and its map is centred on a dense historic core of narrow, winding lanes. The town has a special place in Indian music as the ancestral home of the Kirana gharana, one of the major schools of Hindustani classical singing.
