Kérouané is a prefecture town in Guinea's Kankan Region, in the eastern part of the country, where savanna begins to meet forested hills. On a map, the town has a loose street pattern around its centre. Laterite roads lead out in several directions through open, lightly wooded land and connect it with nearby towns and villages.
The Simandou range, known worldwide for its very large iron ore deposits, extends into Kérouané prefecture. This makes the area important for Guinea's future, although the town itself remains modest.
