Khewra lies in Jhelum district in Pakistan's Punjab, at the southern edge of the Salt Range, where the plain meets a line of steep, eroded hills. The town is compact, with streets gathered on the flat ground below the slopes. The map shows the contrast sharply: dense lanes on one side, bare folded terrain rising on the other.
The town is known for the Khewra Salt Mine, one of the oldest and largest in the world and the main source of the pink rock salt sold worldwide as Himalayan salt. A popular story credits its discovery to the horses of Alexander the Great's army, which were seen licking the rocks. Today the mine's tunnels are also open to visitors.
Above ground, the mine entrances, the rail line and the industrial buildings sit close to the town, while roads wind up into the range behind it. The area around the mine entrance, with its buildings and access roads, forms a separate zone beside the residential streets and marks the industry the town grew around.
