La Crau lies in the Var, inland between Toulon and Hyères, in the broad valley of the Gapeau river. The centre is compact, with narrow streets around a small core, and residential areas spread out along the roads. Beyond them, the map breaks into the patchwork of vineyards and orchards that covers the valley floor.
Wooded hills rise around the valley and frame the town on several sides. The Gapeau winds its way south towards the sea near Hyères. Vineyards dominate the local landscape, and the area belongs to the Côtes de Provence wine region. The Mediterranean coast is only a short distance away, just beyond the edge of the map.
A La Crau map poster shows a town in its farmland. The streets gather tightly in the centre, then loosen as they meet the regular strips of the vineyards, with the curving river and the hills beyond.
