Leça do Bailio is a parish in the municipality of Matosinhos, just north of Porto. On a map it is part of the continuous built-up area around the city, but it has its own centre and a clear natural line: the river Leça, which winds through the parish on its way to the Atlantic at Matosinhos.
The parish is known for the Monastery of Leça do Balio, a Gothic church with a fortified tower and battlements that was once the Portuguese seat of the Knights Hospitaller, which is where the name's bailiff title comes from.
