Lira is the main town of the Lango sub-region in northern Uganda. The land around it is mostly flat and green, with scattered homesteads and cultivated plots. From above, the town is a compact commercial centre where several main roads meet, surrounded by lower-density neighbourhoods that fade gradually into the countryside.
The town serves as a trading and administrative hub for the surrounding districts, and it is home to Lira University. Its markets draw produce from the farmland around it, and the roads that converge on the centre link it with Gulu, Soroti and the route south towards Kampala.
