Luckenwalde is the main town of the Teltow-Fläming district, about fifty kilometres south of Berlin. The Nuthe river runs through it, and on a map the town reads as a compact old centre with a larger ring of nineteenth- and twentieth-century streets, railway sidings and former factory sites around it, all set in the flat, forested country of Brandenburg.
The town's industrial past left notable architecture. Its best-known building is the hat factory designed by Erich Mendelsohn in the early 1920s, an important work of expressionist industrial design. In the centre, the medieval Marktturm, a freestanding bell tower, is a reminder of the older town beneath the industrial layers.
A Luckenwalde map poster shows those layers together: the tighter streets of the old core, the long straight lines of the railway and the larger blocks of former industry. The river adds a soft, irregular line through the middle that balances the geometry.
