Lugo stands on a rise above the Miño River in Galicia, and its old centre is enclosed by Roman walls built in the third century. The walls survive as a complete circuit, the finest example of their kind, and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. On a map they form an unmistakable rounded outline.
Inside the walls, a dense tangle of streets surrounds the cathedral and the old squares. Outside them, the modern city spreads in all directions, with broader streets and blocks, and to the west the Miño runs through its valley below the town.
