Manhumirim lies in the Zona da Mata of eastern Minas Gerais, a region of steep hills, small rivers and coffee farms not far from the Serra do Caparaó. The town grew along the valley floor. On a map its streets follow the lie of the land, stretching out where the ground is flat and thinning quickly as the slopes rise.
This is the defining feature of a Manhumirim map poster: the terrain shaped the street pattern more than any plan did. Short streets climb the slopes on either side and end where the ground becomes too steep, creating a fringe of branching lines around the edges of town.
