Martaban, now officially Mottama, lies on the Salween river opposite Mawlamyine, just before the river opens into the Gulf of Mottama. The town is small and stretched along the waterfront. On a map its streets form a narrow band between the river and the low farmland behind it.
For centuries this was a significant trading port, and its name became attached to the large glazed storage jars, known as Martaban jars, that were shipped from here across the Indian Ocean. The town was also a royal seat of the Mon kingdom of Hanthawaddy from the late thirteenth century, until the capital moved to Bago.
Today the Thanlwin Bridge carries road and rail across the wide river to Mawlamyine. A Martaban map poster shows that crossing clearly, with the town on one side, the broad Salween in the middle and the edge of the larger city opposite, in a composition built around water.
The long road and rail bridge spans the river to Mawlamyine, drawing a single bold line across the widest part of the map.
Martaban's streets run along the bank in a narrow strip. The old port layout still shows in the way the town faces the water.
Just beyond the town the river widens toward the Gulf of Mottama, and islands and mudflats give the southern part of the poster an open, fluid character.

Martaban holds a long maritime history in a very small space. For people from Mon State, and for collectors who know Martaban jars, the town's riverside outline is worth hanging for both local and historical reasons.
Use Martaban or Mottama as the title, add a subtitle, and keep or edit the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint turns the estuary into a crisp, chart-like view.
