Katun river
The broad Katun sweeps past the village, often splitting into channels and gravel islands. It is the most powerful line on the map and sets the orientation of everything around it.

Mayma lies in the Altai Republic where the small Mayma River runs into the Katun, one of the great rivers of the Altai. The village extends along the valley floor, and on a map it reads as a linear settlement, streets following the rivers and the main road rather than forming a centre. Wooded slopes rise on both sides and frame the built area.
The village adjoins Gorno-Altaysk, the republic's capital, and the two have grown towards each other along the valley. The Chuysky Trakt, the historic road that climbs through the Altai towards Mongolia, passes close by, giving the map a strong line that runs with the Katun. Side streets branch off in short rows of houses and garden plots.
Mayma is one of the older Russian settlements in the region, and it serves as a gateway for travellers heading up the Katun valley. A Mayma map poster brings together the braided course of the river, the ribbon of houses along the valley and the steep, empty hillsides that press in on either side.
The broad Katun sweeps past the village, often splitting into channels and gravel islands. It is the most powerful line on the map and sets the orientation of everything around it.
Houses and garden plots line up along the valley floor in long rows, a pattern shaped entirely by the narrow flat ground between river and hills.
The main highway follows the Katun upstream towards the high Altai, a single confident curve linking the village to the mountain routes beyond.

Ko e hā ʻa Mayma
Mayma is a place people pass through on the way into the mountains, and a place others call home. The map keeps both stories: the river that guides every journey and the quiet streets that stay behind.
