Milton lies immediately south of Boston, and its map has two natural edges. To the north, the Neponset River separates the town from Boston's Dorchester and Mattapan neighbourhoods. To the south, the wooded Blue Hills Reservation rises to Great Blue Hill. In between, residential streets curve around hills, estates and ponds rather than following a strict grid.
The contrast between the older village centres near the river and the open land of the southern half gives the poster real depth. The large wooded reservation covers much of southern Milton. It leaves a wide open space on the map, crossed only by parkways and trails.
