Monforte de Lemos sits in the interior of Galicia, in the province of Lugo, where the flat floor of the Val de Lemos meets the gorges of the Ribeira Sacra. From above, the town looks like a knot of streets pulled tight around a single hill, which rises out of the valley with a medieval keep and a former monastery on top.
The river Cabe runs along the edge of the old quarter, and an old stone bridge carries the street across it. On the flatter ground beyond, newer blocks spread out in a looser grid, and the railway lines show up as long, clean arcs. This is a legacy of the town's role as a Galician rail junction, which shaped its growth in the twentieth century.

River Cabe
The river bends past the historic centre and is crossed by an old stone bridge. It is the softest line on the poster and sets off the denser street pattern on either side.
Railway curves
Long, smooth rail alignments swing around the town. They record Monforte's history as an important junction on the Galician railway network and give the composition broad, clean arcs.
