Murrupula is a district seat in Mozambique's Nampula province, inland from the Indian Ocean coast. The town grew along the road network of the northern interior. From above, it is a modest central area of streets with roads and tracks running out across farmland toward the surrounding villages.
Much of Nampula province is marked by inselbergs, bare granite domes and ridges that rise abruptly from the plains. They give the wider landscape its distinctive profile. Around the town, small fields and paths make a loose, irregular pattern very different from a planned grid.
A Murrupula map poster shows a town defined by its routes. The main roads form the frame, the town gathers where they meet, and a fine network of paths spreads into the open country around it.
The settlement grew up around its main roads, and those lines form the backbone of the map, tying the town to the rest of the province.
Footpaths and small tracks spread outward in irregular webs, linking homesteads and plots and giving the map a delicate, hand-drawn texture.
The surrounding region is known for isolated rocky hills rising from the plains, a signature landscape of inland Nampula.
