Murrupula is a district seat in Mozambique's Nampula province, inland from the Indian Ocean coast. The town grew along the road network of the northern interior. From above, it is a modest central area of streets with roads and tracks running out across farmland toward the surrounding villages.
Much of Nampula province is marked by inselbergs, bare granite domes and ridges that rise abruptly from the plains. They give the wider landscape its distinctive profile. Around the town, small fields and paths make a loose, irregular pattern very different from a planned grid.
