About this New York City map poster
New York is a city of islands and water, and the street map makes that impossible to miss. Manhattan runs as a narrow blade between the Hudson River and the East River, Staten Island sits apart in the harbour, and Brooklyn and Queens share the western end of Long Island. Only the Bronx belongs to the mainland. The five boroughs read as separate shapes held together by bridges.
Above the older, tangled streets of Lower Manhattan, the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 laid down the famous grid: avenues running the length of the island, numbered streets crossing it. Broadway ignores the rule, tracing an older route on a slant and creating squares wherever it crosses an avenue, from Union Square to Herald Square and Times Square.
The grid pauses once, for Central Park, a clean rectangle of open ground in the middle of Manhattan that shows up on a New York City map poster as a calm, pale field among the dense blocks. Across the East River, Brooklyn's streets turn at different angles, each old town keeping its own grid, and the coastline frays into bays, inlets and marshes toward Jamaica Bay.

Broadway's diagonal
The one major street that refuses the grid, Broadway cuts across Manhattan at an angle and leaves a trail of triangular plazas and squares wherever it meets the avenues.
East River bridges
The Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges cross the East River close together, three fine lines tying Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge, the oldest of them, opened in 1883.
