Náchod lies in northeastern Bohemia, in the valley of the Metuje river, right on the border with Poland. The town fills the valley floor and climbs the slopes on both sides. Above it on a hill stands Náchod Château, whose long buildings and gardens form a clear shape on the map above the streets below.
The historic square, with its church and town hall, sits near the river, and streets spread out from it along the valley. Roads towards the Polish border and the spa town of Kudowa-Zdrój follow the land to the northeast. Wooded hills close in around the town, limiting where streets can go.
A Náchod map poster shows a town shaped by its valley and its border. In 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War, a battle was fought near the town. The writer Josef Škvorecký was born here, and his novel The Cowards is set in a fictionalised version of Náchod.
