Neryungri lies in the south of the Sakha Republic, in the mountainous taiga of the Aldan uplands. It is a young town, founded in the 1970s to serve a huge coal deposit, and its map shows a planned Soviet layout: residential districts of apartment blocks arranged in groups, wide avenues and a clear separation between housing and industry.
The open-pit mine to the south is so large that it appears on the map as a separate landscape, with benches, haul roads and spoil heaps. The railway, the Amur–Yakutsk line branching north from the Baikal–Amur Mainline, reaches the town and its coal yards. All around it, the taiga and low mountains leave the town isolated.
Neryungri was built on permafrost in a harsh climate, and its construction was one of the big projects of the late Soviet period. A Neryungri map poster shows the town's structure clearly: a compact planned settlement, a railway and a giant mine, drawn together in black lines against an empty background.
Apartment blocks are grouped into neighbourhoods along wide avenues. Their regular geometry makes the town centre look designed from the start.
The coal mine south of town is huge. Its terraces and haul roads form a pattern that looks almost like contour lines.
The Amur–Yakutsk railway brings a single line into the town. It is the only direct link to the rest of the network.

Ko e hā ʻa Neryungri
Many people who lived and worked in Neryungri have since moved elsewhere, and a map of the town where they spent those years is a meaningful reminder. Its planned shape and mine make an unusual poster.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the years you lived there, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
