Newburn is on the north bank of the River Tyne at the western edge of Newcastle upon Tyne. The river is still fairly narrow here and curves through a broad valley, with Tyne Riverside Country Park running along its banks. Housing climbs the slope northward, and the old village streets gather near the water.
In 1640 the Battle of Newburn was fought at a ford here, when a Scottish army crossed the Tyne and defeated English forces during the Bishops' Wars. Later the area became industrial, with collieries and works along the riverside. Much of that land has since returned to parkland and playing fields.
A Newburn map poster places the Tyne at the centre. The river's bend becomes a bold curve across the composition, crossed by Newburn Bridge. Green space along the banks provides a quiet band of open ground, and the street pattern thickens as it rises into the residential areas to the north.
