Newton Aycliffe was designated in 1947 as one of Britain's first post-war new towns. It was planned to house the workforce for a large industrial estate that had grown out of a wartime munitions factory. William Beveridge, whose report laid the foundations of the welfare state, was closely involved in its early development and chaired the development corporation.
The map shows the planners' ideas very clearly. Residential areas are grouped into distinct neighbourhoods, each with curving streets, cul-de-sacs and green space. They are linked by distributor roads rather than a traditional grid. To the side, the industrial estate is a large area of broad plots and straight roads, a completely different texture on the page.
The wartime factory is remembered through the Aycliffe Angels, the women who worked there filling munitions. Today the estate includes Hitachi Rail's train manufacturing plant. A Newton Aycliffe map poster makes the town's planned structure very readable: the neighbourhoods, the green spaces between them and the industry they were built to serve.
Housing is arranged in separate neighbourhoods with their own curving streets and green spaces. From above they form clearly defined clusters across the poster.
The large estate beside the town has broad plots and straight roads. It is where wartime munitions work took place and where trains are built today.
Open spaces between the neighbourhoods were part of the original plan. They give the map a rhythm of dense housing and calm, empty areas.
