North Chicopee is part of the city of Chicopee in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, just north of Springfield. The Connecticut River runs along the western side of the area, and the Chicopee River crosses the city before joining it. On the map these two rivers form the main natural boundaries.
Chicopee grew up as a mill city, and its layout still reflects that: denser streets near the rivers and old industrial sites, and more regular residential blocks further away. Highways and rail lines follow the valleys, and larger open spaces such as parks and institutional grounds break up the pattern.
