Northallerton is the county town of North Yorkshire, set in the flat farmland of the Vale of Mowbray between the Pennines and the North York Moors. Its layout is simple and memorable. A single long, broad High Street runs roughly north to south through the centre, and much of the older town is arranged along it in narrow plots and yards.
From above, the High Street appears as a wide band with side streets and alleys leading off to either side, while newer housing estates spread out to the east and west.
