Novi Ligure lies where the Po plain starts to rise towards the Ligurian Apennines, in the province of Alessandria. The name is a reminder that for centuries the town belonged to the Republic of Genoa rather than to Piedmont. On the map, the historic centre is a tight oval of narrow streets at the foot of a small hill topped by the medieval tower.
Around that core the town opens into a looser grid, with long avenues heading off towards Alessandria, Genoa and the surrounding vineyards. Railway lines sweep past to the east, since Novi has long been a junction on the route between Turin, Milan and the Ligurian coast. Farther out, fields and the first hills break the pattern into irregular parcels.
Cycling fans know the town through Costante Girardengo, who was born here, and Fausto Coppi, who lived here. Their museum is one of its landmarks. Others associate Novi with chocolate, since the Pernigotti company was founded here in the nineteenth century. Genoese centre
Narrow lanes and closely packed blocks make up the old town. Many of its facades are painted in the Ligurian manner, and the dense street pattern stands out clearly against the wider avenues outside.

Several lines meet and fan out on the edge of town. Their long, smooth curves contrast with the tighter geometry of the streets.
