Ŏrang lies in North Hamgyong Province, in the far northeast of North Korea, close to the coast of the East Sea. Like many towns in this region, it sits where mountain valleys widen into a narrow coastal strip. The map shows a compact settlement framed by steep terrain inland, with open water not far away.
Reliable detail about Ŏrang is limited, and much of what is known comes from maps and satellite imagery rather than first-hand accounts. Those sources show a modest town of roads, blocks and farmland, linked by road and rail to the larger cities along the coast of North Hamgyong.
That spareness is part of the appeal. An Ŏrang map poster is quiet and restrained: a handful of streets and settlement blocks, the lines of a river valley and the edge of the coast. It is drawn with generous white space, which suits a country so little of which is visible to the outside world.
The town occupies a narrow strip of lower ground between the mountains and the sea, a typical setting for settlements along North Korea's northeastern coast.
Valleys descending from the interior give the surrounding terrain its structure, and their paths guide the roads and fields that radiate out from the town.
The street network is simpler and more open than in larger cities, leaving the map light and uncluttered, with plenty of space around each line.
