Pakwach is in north-western Uganda on the west bank of the Albert Nile, not far downstream from where the river leaves Lake Albert. It sits at a key crossing point, with a bridge carrying the main road from the rest of the country into the West Nile region. Murchison Falls National Park lies just across the river.
On the map, the Nile is the strongest feature. The wide river runs past the town, flanked by wetlands and flat, low land. The streets of Pakwach are grouped near the bridge approach and along the main road, and they thin out quickly into open savanna.
A Pakwach map poster is about a river crossing: the broad sweep of the Nile, the single bridge across it and a small town that grew up around the route. It is a simple, powerful composition.
The river runs broad and slow past the town. On the poster it is a large, calm shape that dominates the whole frame.
The bridge carries the main road across the river into West Nile. It is the single link that explains the town's location.
Murchison Falls National Park lies just across the Nile. Its open, largely roadless land leaves wide blank space next to the town.
