Perugia stands on an irregular hilltop high above the upper Tiber valley. Its historic centre is not one round core but a series of ridges branching out from the main square, each with its own street and quarter. From above, the old town looks like a star or an open hand. Walls, gates and steep stairways follow the edges of these spurs, and the newer city spreads over the lower slopes.
The layers of the city's past are unusually easy to see. Parts of the Etruscan wall survive, including the Arch of Augustus, and Corso Vannucci runs between the Palazzo dei Priori and the cathedral square with the Fontana Maggiore. Beneath the Rocca Paolina, a sixteenth-century papal fortress, medieval streets survive underground. Escalators now pass through them, carrying people up from the lower town.
Perugia is also a university city. It is home to one of Italy's oldest universities and to the University for Foreigners, which draws students from around the world. A Perugia map poster shows the ridges, the winding roads that climb them and the route of the Minimetrò. It gives a precise picture of a city that you understand best by walking up and down it.
The historic centre radiates from Piazza IV Novembre along several ridges, each with its own main street. The result is one of the most distinctive city outlines in central Italy.
The main pedestrian street runs straight along the crest of the hill between the central square and the gardens at Piazza Italia, forming a clear spine on the map.
Roads climbing from the valley bend back on themselves again and again. They draw looping patterns around the hill that show how steep the city's setting really is.

Perugia leaves a strong impression on students who spent a term at the university, on visitors to Umbria Jazz or Eurochocolate, and on anyone who has climbed its stairways. The map turns that memory of hills and walls into something permanent.
