The reservoir
Hong Kong's first reservoir sits in a wooded valley below the Peak. It is a clear, compact shape of water within the green hillside.

Pok Fu Lam covers the western side of Hong Kong Island, from the slopes below Victoria Peak down to the Lamma Channel. From above, Pok Fu Lam Road winds across the hillside, and housing estates, hospitals and university buildings sit on terraces cut into the slope.
In the hills lies Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, completed in 1863 as the first reservoir in Hong Kong. Below it, Pok Fu Lam Village keeps its dense cluster of low houses and narrow paths, one of the last village settlements left on the island. Queen Mary Hospital and parts of the University of Hong Kong occupy prominent sites nearby.
A Pok Fu Lam map poster shows a side of Hong Kong where contour lines matter more than grids. The area also has a place in the city's commercial history: the Dairy Farm Company was founded here in 1886, and its old pastures once covered these hills.
Hong Kong's first reservoir sits in a wooded valley below the Peak. It is a clear, compact shape of water within the green hillside.
The main road curves along the slope from Kennedy Town toward Aberdeen. Estates and institutions line it on terraced sites.
The fine grain of the old village contrasts with large estates around it. Below them, the land drops quickly to the western shoreline.

Pok Fu Lam appeals to HKU alumni, to people who grew up in its estates, and to anyone who knows the quieter western side of the island. The map is dominated by slopes, curves and water.
