Pueblo stands where Fountain Creek joins the Arkansas River, on the high plains south of Colorado Springs. The confluence has been a meeting point for centuries. In 1842 traders built a small adobe fort here, the El Pueblo trading post that gave the city its name. The rivers still divide the map into distinct sections, and the downtown grid sits on the north bank.
In the late nineteenth century Pueblo became the steel city of the West, home to the Colorado Fuel and Iron works, whose huge mill still stretches along the south side of town. Pueblo is also known as the Home of Heroes, because an unusual number of Medal of Honor recipients have lived here. It is known too for the green chile grown on nearby farms.
A Pueblo map poster shows several overlapping grids set at different angles, as neighbourhoods grew around rail yards and river crossings. The steel mill forms a vast geometric block. West of town the river widens into Lake Pueblo, and the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk traces the old channel through downtown. For a city of its size, the image is unusually rich.
The Arkansas River and Fountain Creek meet east of downtown. Their broad channels cross the map and split the city into clearly defined sections.
The former Colorado Fuel and Iron works cover a huge area on the south side. The vast rectangle of sheds, yards and rail spurs reads as a single bold shape.
Downtown's Historic Arkansas Riverwalk follows a restored channel through the centre. To the west, the dam and reservoir of Lake Pueblo State Park form a large, irregular body of water.

Pueblo has a strong local identity built on steel, military service and shared pride in the town. A map poster suits families with roots in the mill neighbourhoods, veterans, and anyone who has moved away but still orders green chile from home each autumn.
